Benedict XVI: Some General Comments
Cardinal Ratzinger is now known as Pope Benedict XVI. I can still hardly believe it. My family and I could not be more pleased. I know that this opinion will draw the scorn of liberal "cafeteria" Catholics everywhere but so what. Sorry, but I am still too relieved at the election of Cardinal Ratzinger to be overly concerned about the feelings of those who will jump at any chance to tear down this great man.I am sure that you are already aware that the smear campaigns are already in full swing on numerous fronts. Brace yourselves! These attacks are just the opening salvos of a larger war. I predict that as time goes on, the attacks will not only persist, but will intensify in number and magnitude. Make no mistake, this pope will not have an easy time, his enemies will see to that.
And who are the enemies of Pope Benedict? The same cast of caracters that bedeviled Pope John Paul the Great: Media outlets, op-ed writers, "cafeteria catholics" including such notables as Fr. Richard P. McBrien, Call to Action and Catholics for a Free Choice, and last, but certainly not least (and probably the most hurtful), any number of liberal bishops, clergy and religious who refuse to honor their vows of obedience to the papacy and Orthodox Catholic Teaching.
Please pray for the Pope. He has many obstacles to overcome and will not be able to complete all of the tasks that the Holy Spirit has entrusted to him without our help. If all of the faithful Catholics throughout the world will get behind and support our Holy Father, then I see great advances for the Church in the near future. However, if we do not give him our full support, then I suspect that God will allow the Church to continue wandering in our current wilderness of confusion and doubt.
